Course information

Contents
The module is aimed at professionals working in a practical field with migrants who wish to further develop their inter-/transcultural competence. They expand their understanding of culture and their knowledge, e.g., about the current integration model in Switzerland, intercultural communication, and transculturality. They bring a willingness to reflect in a differentiated manner on their existing competencies, socio-cultural influences, and practical situations. Based on this, they expand their know-how in dealing with diversity and acting appropriately in inter-/transcultural interaction situations.

Content:
• Causes and forms of migration; acculturation strategies
• Switzerland's current integration model; structural environment of migrants
• Understanding of culture; cultural models; cultural identity and socio-cultural influences; culture shock; resources and opportunities for the development of inter-/transcultural competence
• Value orientation; stereotypes and prejudices; anti-racist awareness-raising
• Inter-/transcultural action competence
• Intercultural communication; dealing with misunderstandings and conflicts
• Intercultural training: cultural and self-reflexivity, self-perception and perception of others, culture-sensitive educational work
• Intercultural teaching and learning (depending on the field of practice)
Goals
Action competence:
To reflect on one's own inter- and transcultural competencies in a differentiated way in order to accompany the integration process of adult migrants, taking into account their socio-cultural background and identity, and to sustainably strengthen their ability to act in Swiss everyday life.

Objectives:
• Describe practical situations concretely and in a differentiated manner with regard to the relevance and development of inter- and transcultural competencies
• Formulate situation-related hypotheses on the socio-cultural influences of those involved, as well as provide theoretically sound justifications and critical reviews
• Recognize different conceptions and practices of communication and interaction, as well as the resulting behavior and corresponding resources, and use them for interaction with individuals and/or groups in practice
• Reflect on one's own inter- and transcultural competence in a differentiated way
• Take into account the current integration model of Switzerland and the structural environment for the reflection of practice
• Derive situation- and role-appropriate alternatives for action from the reflection
• Derive consequences for one's own actions and the (further) development of practice-relevant inter- and transcultural competence from the reflection of inter- and transculturally significant situations
• Promote the awareness of those involved regarding their inter-/transcultural competencies and resources
