Literacy courses in Bern

The literacy and post-literacy courses in Bern and Biel are aimed at non-native speakers who are unable to read and write at all, or can do so only with great difficulty, or who do not know the alphabet.

Depending on their level, participants acquire or develop their reading and writing skills. They learn the Latin alphabet and numbers, develop their phonological awareness and build up their spoken German skills for everyday life. At the same time, they strengthen their independence, develop learning strategies and learn to use their linguistic resources effectively.

The courses are structured in modules and comprise five modules that build on one another. A free placement test is carried out before the course begins to ensure that participants start at the appropriate level. Depending on individual needs, participants may attend one or more modules. Registration becomes binding following the free placement test.

The intensive courses take place four times a week (Tuesday to Friday, 9.00–11.30 am or 2.00–4.30 pm). Three lessons are held each day. A module lasts 12 weeks and comprises a total of 144 lessons.

In Bern, childcare for pre-school children is also available at kidogo childcare (registration required when booking the course).

This course is aimed at people who are not used to formal education and who have spoken German at A2 level or above. The focus is on developing reading and writing skills.
