Literacy courses in Basel

Our literacy courses offer non-native-speaking adults the opportunity to learn to read and write or to build their basic skills in a targeted way.

Depending on their level, participants acquire or develop their reading and writing skills. They learn the Latin alphabet and numbers, develop their phonological awareness and build up their spoken German skills for everyday life. At the same time, they strengthen their independence, develop learning strategies and learn to use their language skills effectively. Through a free placement test, we find the course that best suits each participant.

Course fees

Course fees depend on your place of residence:

  • Canton of Basel-City: 90% reduction in course fees for self-paying participants
  • Canton of Basel-Country: 80% reduction in course fees for self-paying participants

Participants who have received a free voucher from the Canton of Basel-City can attend a course comprising 80 lessons free of charge. The voucher is valid at ECAP Basel for the following course formats: Intensive literacy, afternoon literacy or evening literacy.

On the intensive literacy course, participants practise writing and speaking consistently. This enables them to make faster and more sustainable progress. This course is ideal for people who can devote all their time and energy to learning.

Childcare is provided during course hours.

The literacy programme is spread over a longer period. The speed of learning is tailored to the participants’ needs, allowing more time for in-depth study. The course is ideal for working people or those with family commitments.

Kinderbetreuung für Nachmittagskurse verfügbar.

The Nachalpha courses are tailored to the specific needs of participants who have recently become literate and are suitable as follow-on courses after the ‘Alpha 1’, ‘Alpha 2’ and ‘Alpha 3’ foundation levels. The Nachalpha courses cover the entire A1 level and prepare participants for further regular language courses.
