German language certificates: telc and fide tests in Basel

Telc or fide test: at ECAP Basel, you can sit recognised German language exams and have your language skills officially certified.

German language test for permanent residence and naturalisation

A certificate improves your opportunities on the labour market and is often a prerequisite for a residence permit or naturalisation. To obtain a residence permit or be naturalised, you will need a recognised language certificate (telc or fide test). Depending on the procedure, the following requirements apply:

  • Residence permit: A2 oral, A1 written
  • Early residence permit: B1 oral, A2 written
  • Naturalisation in Basel-City: B1 oral, A2 written
  • Naturalisation in Basel-Country: B1 oral and written

ECAP Basel is an accredited telc examination centre. telc is an internationally recognised system of language examinations. The certificates are recognised by companies, public authorities and educational institutions. You can sit telc examinations at levels A1 to C1.

ECAP Basel is accredited to deliver the fide test and offers it in German, the national language, at levels A1 to B1 (CEFR). The fide test was initiated by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) and is recognised throughout Switzerland.

The fide test allows you to demonstrate your oral and written German language skills. It is used, amongst other things, by public authorities, for further education and when looking for a job. After taking the test, you will receive the Swiss Language Passport, which certifies your language skills.
